Mesothelioma Research

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation has been working for many years to help find a cure for this life shattering disease. This group works hard to help raise funds to continue the needed research in finding treatments to improve and extend the lives of those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

This foundation is completely nonprofit and every penny that is donated or acquired by grants goes towards continuous studies in the effort to treat, prevent, and someday hopefully find an absolute cure for this potentially deadly disease. In 2008, their hard work finally paid off when they were awarded a grant of $50 million by the Department of Defense to continue the necessary research and clinical trials to fight this disease.

Mesothelioma research can also be accredited for helping find the cause of this horrible disease. With thorough laboratory studies, it has been determined that one of the most common causes of mesothelioma, is the inhalation of asbestos fibers that was used in many different types job sites. These types of fibers are laced with deadly chemicals that have been found in the respiratory systems of many who were diagnosed with mesothelioma. Over the years a long list of factories, chemical plants, construction jobs, and many other types of employment involved coming into contact with asbestos fibers.

The extensive work of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation involves funding a variety of treatments to continue working towards a cure. One treatment that is frequently used is surgery. This surgery can be done in one of two ways. A complete removal of the part of the lungs that the mesothelioma is in is always the preferred type of surgery. However, if this is not an option, a partial surgery, known as debulking, may be possible. Regardless of what type of surgery is done, this treatment is normally combined with a variety of chemotherapy, radiation, or sometimes both.

Mesothelioma research has also used donations and grants to fund various clinical trials in the search for the best medications for the treatment and cure of mesothelioma. These clinical trials involve testing different drugs and surgical procedures on animals to measure the tolerance of living, breathing patients. No clinical trials are done on human patients until extensive tests have first been done on laboratory animals. This helps ensure there are no adverse human reactions to any drugs or procedures that are still in the trial stages.

Another great benefit of mesothelioma research is the experts that are affiliated with this group. Patients can rest assured that their medical needs are always the first concern by the caring medical professionals that are working vigorously to find the best in treatments for their mesothelioma needs. The staff of physicians, nurses, and medical scientists that partake in the constant study of therapies and clinical trials give all they have in the continuous search for a cure.

With continued support from grants and both public and private donations, the research that is being done on mesothelioma may very well be able to find a cure for this disease. This foundation has went above and beyond that of many other research groups and hope to one day claim the fame of helping mesothelioma patients to regain the clean bill of health they so desire and deserve.
